Variation #1: lights.

Variation #2: projecting non-sequitur images on buildings. Here, the Berliner Dom.

The "Festival of Lights"--as it was so aptly named--lit 40 of Berlin's more famous buildings, memorials, and locations. Unfortunately, it was an exercise in finding the lowest common denominator of art: the goals of tourism aren't quite congruent with the frontier of installation art.

The Brain

Had my first day of real school today... attended two classes that
were both pretty solid. Definitely did not realize that if class is
listed to start at 2pm, this means it actually starts at 2:15pm, per
the unwritten "academic half hour" rule. So twice today, for a total
of 30 minutes, I sat around and carried on an internal monologue on
how democratic-socialist principles breed laziness. Also new to me
was the "knocking": basically, after lecture or class ends, you are
supposed to rap on the table to show your appreciation. Well, they
should write this up for americans, because i nearly laughed out
loud. "Ooops."
Of course I also discover the library, pictured in part above, which
is a beautiful modernist interpretation of the cerebral cortex--very
sexy, i know. More pictures to come as i spend more time there.

The S-bahn (light rail system-- one of four public transportation means available in berlin) was on strike today, meaning people waited up to 40 minutes for trains that normally run every 3 minutes. The weather reminded me of Seattle, "...partially cloudy with scattered showers throughout the afternoon... expect sunbreaks late in the day"

And thanks to my fantastic new camera phone, more pictures to come!
